His Eye Is on the Sparrow #624 the Celebration Hymnal

Text by Civilla D. Martin

Music by Charles H. Gabriel

Based on Luke 12:6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.

It is easy to allow ourselves to become discouraged, shuttered up in our homes, distanced from our friends and family, unable to go to work, unable to help others in the ways we were accustomed to. In my own low times, the first verse of this beautiful hymn plays on a loop in my head.

Why should I feel discouraged?

Why should the shadows come?

Why should my heart be lonely,

And long for heaven and home,

When Jesus is my portion?

My constant Friend is He:

His eye is on the sparrow,

And I know He watches me.

I cling to these words for comfort, for courage, for peace of mind. I find myself singing them throughout the day and guiding my prayers. In doing so a wave of peace comes over me. In closing I share the words of the refrain:

I sing because I’m happy.

I sing because I’m free;

For His eye is on the sparrow,

And I know He watches me.
